چکیده

Exploration of large-scale 3D Virtual Environments (VEs) is difficult because of lack of familiarity with complex virtual worlds, lack of spatial information that can be offered to users and lack of sensory (visual, auditory, locomotive) details compared to exploration of real environments. To address this problem, we present a set of metaphors for assisting users in collaborative navigation to perform common exploration tasks in shared collaborative virtual environments. Our propositions consist in three guiding techniques in the form of navigation aids to enable one or several users (called helping user(s)) to help one main user (called exploring user) to explore the VE efficiently. These three techniques consist in drawing directional arrows, lighting up path to follow, and orienting a compass to show a direction to the exploring user. All the three techniques are generic so they can be used for any kind of 3D VE, and they do not affect the main structure of the VE so its integrity is guaranteed. To compare the efficiency of these three guiding techniques, we have conducted an experimental study of a collaborative task whose aim was to find hidden target objects in a complex and multi-scale shared 3D VE. Our results show that although the directional arrows and compass surpassed the light source for the navigation task, these three techniques are completely appropriate for guiding a user in 3D complex VEs.

Moving Towards Natural Interaction Between Multiscale Avatars in Multi-User Virtual Environments

Multiscale collaborative virtual environments (MCVEs) are interesting for many application domains as they allow multiple users to interact with virtual worlds and themselves at different scales. However, natural interaction in such environments is often quite difficult, since the natural relations between humans and the environment in terms of body size, capabilities, affordances, personal spa...

Thesis for the Degree of Licentiate of Philosophy Collaborative Environments: Aspects in Communication and Educational Visualisation

This thesis examines several technical and educational aspects in collaborative environments. Collaborative environments help multiple users to share and modify data objects in real-time although the users themselves may not be present at the same physical location. The users of the collaborative environment form a group in which they can exchange information about the state and updates of shar...

Sharing Viewpoints in Collaborative Virtual Environments

In this paper we explore to what degree shared viewpoints in three-dimensional collaborative virtual environments enable effective collaboration. The paper applies research on shared viewpoints and telepointers to 3D environments. A lightweight Java-based tool for creating collaborative virtual environments was developed and used in the study. The system is realized as an application framework ...

A web-based user interaction framework for collaboratively building and validating ontologies

Collaborative ontology building requires innovative navigational instruments that improve content exploration and the creation of shared meaning. Building upon an existing architecture for automated ontology learning from unstructured textual resources developed by the authors, this paper presents a Web-based user interaction framework encompassing three major components: (i) real-time visualiz...

A Methodological Framework for Project-based Collaborative Learning in a Networked Environment

In this work we present a new way to use existing technology in a real learning context. We investigate and propose a scenario based on collaborative work of virtual groups of students developing a software project. Our intent is to promote learning through collaborative implementation of a project in shared workspaces. This raises several important issues that concern virtual group formation t...
